| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Kwame Nkrumah, first President and founder of Ghana, rendered in high relief with naturalistic modelling; the engraver's initials 'C.T.' appear at the truncation. Ghana's 1965 coinage series was the first issued entirely under the authority of the Bank of Ghana following the country's break from the British West African Currency Board system. The shift was part of Kwame Nkrumah's broader economic nationalism program, which sought to untangle Ghana's financial infrastructure from colonial-era institutions. These coins entered circulation just months before the February 1966 military coup that ousted Nkrumah while he was en route to Hanoi.
The coup government, the National Liberation Council, subsequently withdrew Nkrumah's effigy coinage from circulation — making the effective circulation window for this issue under a year.
