During the Spanish Civil War, the collapse of small-denomination coinage circulation forced hundreds of Catalan municipalities and cooperatives to print their own emergency paper. The Cooperativa Unió de Cooperadors in Igualada was one of them — a consumer cooperative issuing scrip redeemable within its own commercial network rather than through any banking authority. These notes functioned as internal currency, accepted by member businesses but worthless outside that closed economy.
Printed locally by Imprenta Bas, the production is modest by any standard. Igualada's cooperative movement was well-organized by 1938, but the war's final year brought acute shortages of everything, including quality printing materials.
