During the Spanish Civil War, the breakdown of the Republican monetary supply — driven by hoarding of coin and the collapse of normal banking — forced hundreds of Catalan municipalities and organizations to issue their own emergency paper. The Unió de Cooperadors de Badalona, a workers' cooperative rather than a municipal authority, was among the non-governmental bodies that stepped in. Cooperative-issued notes occupy an unusual legal grey zone in the emergency currency literature: they carried no formal state backing whatsoever, circulating purely on institutional trust within a local membership.
Badalona's cooperative issues are catalogued under Gari's regional monograph, which remains the primary reference for this material and is not widely held outside specialist collections.
