The denomination numeral '10' appears in red at the upper right within an ornate cartouche, with decorative column vignettes on either side of the central field. Montenegro is one of very few European states to have printed its own banknotes domestically rather than contracting a specialist security printer abroad. The 1914 series, produced at Cetinje under wartime pressure, reflects that constraint directly — the printing quality is noticeably cruder than earlier Montenegrin issues handled by foreign firms, and the paper stock varies between surviving examples.
The notes were issued just as Austria-Hungary launched its invasion in late 1914. Much of the circulating stock was caught in the subsequent occupation, and a substantial portion never returned to the treasury.
