The Isle of Man gained full control over its own coinage in 1971 when the Manx government assumed responsibility from the British Crown — a practical consequence of the island's constitutional status as a Crown dependency rather than part of the United Kingdom. The silver 10 pence issues of the mid-to-late 1970s were struck by the Pobjoy Mint, which held the contract for Manx coinage during this period and produced pieces in multiple compositions simultaneously, accounting for the parallel reference numbers under Schön.
Collector demand, not circulation need, drove the silver strikes.
