Reverse description A detailed relief effigy of a Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) occupies the central field, depicted dorsal view with wings fully spread, showcasing the characteristic wing venation and marginal spotting rendered in fine numismatic detail by engraver Mike Langman. The inscription TEN PENCE arcs along the upper periphery of the field, while the species name RED ADMIRAL is inscribed along the lower periphery in serif capital letters. The composition fills the field with naturalistic precision, leaving a plain, unadorned field as background.

Additional information

Guernsey has issued a long-running series of circulating and collector 10 pence pieces featuring native wildlife and local subjects, the butterfly issues among them. The Red Admiral is resident in the Channel Islands through summer migration from continental Europe, making it a legitimate regional subject rather than a purely decorative choice.

KM#431 was struck during the final years of Elizabeth II's reign, one of the last cohorts of Guernsey coinage to carry her effigy before her death in September 2022.
