Chicken Rock Lighthouse, completed in 1875 after years of wrecks on the reef south of the Calf of Man, was built by David and Thomas Stevenson — the same family firm that produced Robert Louis Stevenson's father and uncle. The Isle of Man's coinage has long used local landmarks to differentiate its issues from mainland British currency, a practical necessity given the shared denomination structure with sterling.
A fire gutted the lighthouse in 1960, leaving it unmanned permanently. Trinity House automated a replacement light rather than restore the interior.
