Gibraltar's wildlife coinage series, launched in the 1990s and expanded through subsequent decades, reflects the territory's unusual ecological position — the Barbary partridge is one of the few wild bird species established on the Rock itself, descended from populations that have lived there for centuries and found nowhere else in Europe outside Gibraltar and Sardinia.
