Saint Helena's coinage has always operated on a peculiar logistical footing — the island's remoteness meant that coin supplies arrived infrequently, and individual issues often circulated far longer than intended. This particular small-type reduction followed the UK's own 1992 downsizing of the 10 pence, though Saint Helena and Ascension lagged behind by several years in adopting the change. The third portrait of Elizabeth II, modeled by Raphael Maklouf, was already being phased out on British domestic coinage by the time this island series was still actively using it.
