The Island Games were founded in 1985 specifically to give athletes from small island territories — many too small to field competitive Olympic teams — a dedicated international competition. Gibraltar was the founding host. This 2019 issue commemorates the games returning to Gibraltar for the first time since that inaugural edition, a gap of 34 years.
