Reverse description A full-colour applied depiction of the Small Copper butterfly (Lycaena phlaeas) occupies the centre of the field, its wings spread open to display the characteristic orange-and-black patterning on the forewings and the brownish-grey hindwings with an orange submarginal band, rendered in vivid polychrome against the silver-toned nickel-plated steel surface. The legend TEN PENCE arches along the upper periphery, while SMALL COPPER BUTTERFLY curves along the lower periphery. The design was executed by wildlife artist Mike Langman.
