| Additional information |
Guernsey's decision to issue colourised circulating-format coinage reflects a broader trend among British Crown Dependencies of treating the decimal series as a vehicle for wildlife conservation messaging. The sand lizard (*Lacerta agilis*) has no native population in Guernsey — it is a protected species in mainland Britain, where reintroduction programmes have been running since the 1970s under Wildlife & Countryside Act provisions. Its appearance on a Guernsey issue is therefore a curatorial choice rather than a statement of local natural heritage.
