Guernsey has issued its own distinctive coinage since 1830, operating outside the British monetary system until decimalization brought its denominations into alignment with sterling in 1971. The Royal Golden Guernsey goat — the breed this coin celebrates — was developed on the island over centuries of selective breeding, achieving formal recognition as a distinct dairy breed in the early twentieth century.
