Guernsey has long issued its own decimal coinage distinct from UK circulation, a right tied to the island's status as a Crown dependency outside the United Kingdom proper. The pike motif on this denomination has appeared on Guernsey's 10 pence since the island's decimalisation in 1971, making it one of the more enduring designs in the series. Colourised versions of circulating-type coins are generally produced for the collector market rather than circulation, typically through applied enamel or lacquer processes after striking.
