Guernsey has operated with considerable autonomy in its coinage decisions as a Crown Dependency, issuing its own distinctive currency outside the UK's Royal Mint remit. The green tiger beetle — a fast-running, iridescent predator found in sandy coastal habitats — has faced measurable decline in Britain due to habitat loss, which likely informed its selection here. Colourised circulating-denomination coins of this type are produced for the collector market and see essentially no commercial circulation.
