Banco Nacional Ultramarino has issued lunar new year commemorative 10 pataca notes for Macau annually since 2012, each tied to the corresponding animal in the twelve-year cycle. The Year of the Rat edition falls within the final years of BNU's note-issuing role in Macau, a concession it has held — with interruptions — since 1902, though its practical monopoly on pataca issuance is now shared with the Banco da China Macau branch.
