The Banco Nacional Ultramarino ceased to have any operational presence in Macau long before this series was printed — the right of issue had been delegated to BNU by the Portuguese colonial administration, and that arrangement was grandfathered into the post-1999 handover framework, making BNU one of two commercial banks legally authorized to issue currency in the Special Administrative Region alongside the Banco da China. This is an unusual survival of colonial-era banking infrastructure into a Chinese SAR, and the 10 Patacas sits at the low end of a series that continued well into the second decade after handover with minimal structural change.
The P#80 series replaced earlier BNU issues that had drawn criticism for inadequate security features relative to the note's longevity in circulation.
