Bradbury Wilkinson printed extensively for colonial and dependent territories throughout the postwar decades, and Macau's BNU notes of this period are among the quieter entries in that portfolio. By 1981, Macau's economy was already deeply tied to Hong Kong dollar flows, with the pataca effectively pegged to the HKD since 1977 at a rate of 1.03 patacas to the dollar — a peg that formalized what the market had long since decided on its own.
Pick 59 ran through 1984, the year Sino-British negotiations over Hong Kong's future sharpened regional anxieties about the Pearl River Delta's political horizon. Whether that affected distribution patterns for this series is undocumented, but BNU retained its note-issuing role in Macau until handover in 1999.
