The Banco da China branch in Macau began issuing notes only in 1995, making it the last of the territory's three note-issuing banks to enter circulation — the other two being Banco Nacional Ultramarino and Tai Fung Bank. This 2003 issue predates the full transfer of note-issuing rights but reflects Beijing's growing institutional presence in Macau following the 1999 handover to China.
The "lotus numeral" designation distinguishes this variety from otherwise similar issues in the series by the numeral font used in the denomination rendering — a detail that matters for completeness in type sets.
