Bank of China began issuing banknotes in Macau in 1995, joining Banco Nacional Ultramarino as a note-issuing institution under an arrangement that reflected Beijing's growing influence over the territory ahead of the 1999 handover. The 10 Patacas was the lowest denomination in Bank of China's inaugural Macau series, printed by Hongkong Printing Press — the same Hong Kong-based facility used for much of the bank's regional currency work during the 1990s.
Security specification on this issue is notably minimal: watermark only, with no security thread. Later printings of the series added features, making the 1995 originals distinguishable by their comparatively sparse authentication.
