Kafana (café/tavern) tokens printed on paper were a practical stop-gap in Montenegro, where small change was chronically scarce throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This 10 para piece issued by Kafana R. Biljanovića is among the more localized examples of the type — a private obligation redeemable only at one establishment in Cetinje, the tiny Montenegrin capital.
Štamparija A. Rajnvajna was the principal print shop in Cetinje and handled an eclectic mix of official and commercial work. That this token was produced there rather than sourced from a larger regional printer says something about how routine such instruments were in local commerce.
