Abdülaziz's Egyptian coinage of this period reflects an awkward administrative reality: Egypt was nominally an Ottoman province, yet its Khedive Ismail was aggressively pursuing de facto independence, borrowing heavily from European banks to modernize infrastructure and expand southward into Sudan.
