Abdülaziz's Egyptian coinage of this period reflects an awkward administrative reality: Egypt was nominally an Ottoman province, yet its Khedive Ismail was aggressively pursuing de facto independence, borrowing heavily from European banks to modernize infrastructure and expand southward into Sudan. The small copper denominations were workhorses of local commerce, largely ignored by the financial elites conducting business in foreign coin.
