Yugoslavia struck this long-running small denomination through a period of considerable internal economic strain, including the liberalizing reforms of 1965 that decentralized the planned economy and triggered a sharp devaluation of the dinar. The 10 para retained nominal purchasing power long after inflation had rendered it practically worthless in daily transactions — a fate common to Yugoslav subunit coinage by the late 1970s.
The aluminium-brass alloy was a deliberate cost-control choice, cheaper than the nickel compositions used on higher denominations.
