Montenegro's nickel coinage of 1913–14 was issued at a peculiar political moment: the kingdom had just emerged from the Balkan Wars having nearly doubled its territory, and Nicholas I was minting coins almost as acts of sovereign assertion while simultaneously negotiating the country's absorption into a future Yugoslav state. Within a decade, Montenegro would cease to exist as an independent entity.
