The Repubblica Romana of 1798 was the French-backed republic that displaced Pius VI after Napoleon's Italian campaigns — its paper currency was among the shortest-lived in European history, the entire state collapsing within seventeen months. The original 10 Paoli assignat-style notes were printed in Rome under genuinely chaotic administrative conditions, and authentic surviving examples are extremely rare.
