The International Year of the Child was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1976, designating 1979 — the twentieth anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child — as a year of advocacy and fundraising for children's welfare globally. India was among dozens of nations that issued commemorative coinage to mark it. The aluminium-magnesium alloy used here was already well-established in India's low-denomination coinage by this point, introduced partly to reduce production costs as base metal prices rose through the 1970s.
