World Food Day was established by the FAO in 1979 and first observed on October 16, 1981 — the anniversary of the organization's founding in 1945. India issued this coin specifically to mark that inaugural observance, part of a broader FAO program that recruited national mints worldwide to produce commemorative circulation coinage as a low-cost public awareness mechanism. The Reserve Bank of India participated extensively in these FAO series throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, making Indian issues among the most numerous in the global program.
