Mahendra Bir Bikram ruled Nepal as an absolute monarch after dissolving the elected government in 1960 and banning political parties — a system he formalized as the Panchayat democracy, which concentrated real power in the palace. Coinage issued under his name throughout the 1960s reflects the deliberate centralizing of national identity around the crown rather than any parliamentary institution.
The brass composition adopted for this series was a practical response to the chronic shortage of copper-nickel alloys in Nepal's supply chain during the period.
