Gyanendra's first stint as king lasted just three days in June 2001, following the royal massacre that killed his brother Birendra and most of the immediate family. He was crowned a second time in October 2001 after his nephew Dipendra — who had carried out the shootings — died from self-inflicted wounds while technically reigning in a coma. These aluminium small-denomination pieces span that entire turbulent transition, minted through a period when the Maoist insurgency was accelerating toward the state of emergency Gyanendra would declare in 2002.
