Reverse description Central device depicts the FAO United Nations Decade for Women symbol, rendered as a stylised shield incorporating the female Venus symbol (a circle surmounted by a cross) combined with an equality sign, set within a dove-like outline. The legend 'RURAL WOMEN'S ADVANCEMENT' arcs along the upper and lateral periphery, with '·FAO·' inscribed along the lower border, flanked by dots. Additional information

Issued under the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) program, which commissioned commemorative coinage from member nations throughout the 1970s and 1980s as a vehicle for publicizing food security initiatives. Tonga's participation produced some of the smallest gold coins of the entire program. At 0.4 grams, this piece sits at the extreme lower boundary of what can technically be struck in gold while retaining a legible design — a constraint that caused production difficulties at several mints working with FAO issues of this scale.
