Tonga's 1988 platinum sports series was produced in the lead-up to the Seoul Olympics, issued under the authority of King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, who had a well-documented personal interest in athletics. These small-mintage platinum pieces were sold primarily to foreign collectors and never entered circulation — Tonga's domestic economy had no practical use for a .950 platinum coin.
KM#132 is among the scarcest in the series by surviving population.
