Tonga adopted its constitution on November 4, 1875, under King George Tupou I — a document drafted with substantial input from Shirley Waldemar Baker, a Wesleyan missionary who would later become the kingdom's prime minister and, eventually, a deeply controversial figure expelled under British pressure in 1890. The centennial struck exactly one hundred years later under his descendant Taufa'Ahau Tupou IV coincided with Tonga having only recently regained full sovereignty, having shed its British protected-state status in 1970.
