This note takes its nickname from Queen Salote Tupou III, who died in December 1965 before the series entered circulation — meaning the notes bearing her name were issued posthumously, under the reign of her son Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. De La Rue printed the series, as they had handled Tongan currency for decades, and the watermark security remained relatively modest by the standards of what the same printer was producing for other Pacific territories at the time.
The six-year issue window is longer than it appears: Tonga only gained full independence from British protection in June 1970, midway through this note's circulation life.
