The National Reserve Bank of Tonga was established in 1989, replacing the Bank of Tonga as the country's central monetary authority. Thomas De La Rue's involvement with Tongan currency goes back considerably further, and this 2009 issue continues an unbroken printing relationship. Nothing unusual marks the security specification for this denomination and date — watermark and thread were standard for De La Rue's Pacific island client work at the time.
Pick 40 is part of a series that saw relatively light circulation pressure given Tonga's small population, under 100,000, which tends to keep surviving examples in better condition than comparable denominations from high-volume economies.
