Sweden's coinage underwent a significant compositional overhaul in the early 1960s as rising silver prices made the existing alloy economically untenable. This nickel pattern was part of the testing process that preceded the 1962 transition away from silver for minor denominations. Pattern pieces from this period were struck in limited numbers for internal Riksbank and Royal Mint evaluation — they were never intended for release and most were melted after testing concluded.
Survivors reaching the market typically did so through estate dispersals of former mint personnel.
