Norway's shift away from pure copper-nickel coinage was driven largely by postwar metal economics, and the Royal Norwegian Mint experimented with iron-core planchets as a cost-reduction measure throughout the early 1950s. This 1954 piece is a pattern strike from that evaluation process — the plating technology was ultimately judged inadequate for circulation durability, and standard copper-nickel production continued unchanged through the remainder of Haakon VII's reign.
