Additional information

Anastasius I's currency reform of 498 AD was one of the most consequential monetary reorganizations in Byzantine history — reintroducing clearly marked bronze denominations after decades in which small copper coins had circulated with no face value indicated. The 10 nummi piece was part of that reformed system, with the large "I" mark introduced specifically so that illiterate market users could identify value by sight. Constantinople issues without an officina letter represent an early and somewhat irregular phase of the reform before workshop discipline tightened.
