Anastasius I's currency reform of 498 AD is one of the most consequential monetary decisions in Byzantine history. After decades of a debased, anonymous small-change system that had made everyday transactions cumbersome, Anastasius introduced clearly marked bronze denominations with explicit value marks — the 10 nummi piece among them. The reform was fiscally successful enough that the emperor died leaving the treasury with a surplus reportedly near 320,000 pounds of gold.
The Antioch mint was one of several reactivated under this reform. The large module designation distinguishes early issues from the reduced-weight pieces that followed as the mint system was refined through Anastasius's reign.
