Obverse description The obverse presents the Mexican national arms in high relief at centre, depicting an eagle perched upon a cactus and devouring a serpent, surrounded by an oak and laurel wreath. The design is set within a raised hexagonal panel whose border is decorated with a repeating frieze of pre-Columbian Mayan glyphs, echoed again in the outer annular ring of the coin. The curved legend ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS arcs above the arms within the panel. Below the hexagonal frame, in the lower field, the denomination inscription 5 ONZAS DE PLATA and the fineness LEY 0.999 appear in two lines.
