| Additional information |
The Piedra de Tizoc — sometimes called the Stone of Tizoc — is a large basalt disc carved during the reign of the Aztec ruler Tizoc, who held power from 1481 to 1486. The stone records military conquests in carved relief and was discovered beneath the Zócalo in Mexico City in 1791, where it had lain buried since the Spanish demolished Tenochtitlan's ceremonial precinct in the 1520s.
This issue belongs to Mexico's long-running Onzas de Plata pre-Columbian artifact series, which Banco de México launched in 1977. The 5 oz denomination was added later in the series run, making KM#650 one of the larger and less commonly encountered pieces from the program.
