The El Tajín five-ounce pieces were part of Mexico's ambitious "Pre-Columbian Cultures" bullion series, which ran through the late 1980s and 1990s and drew on a roster of archaeological sites rather than the political iconography dominating most sovereign bullion programs of the period. Casa de Moneda de México issued these in relatively modest quantities compared to the one-ounce Libertad issues running concurrently, which keeps secondary market supply tighter than casual collectors expect.
El Tajín itself is a Totonac ceremonial center in Veracruz, its construction spanning roughly the 9th through 13th centuries.
