The 1992 Nuevos Pesos series marked Mexico's currency redenomination, which dropped three zeros from the old Peso to create the "Nuevo Peso" — a direct response to the inflationary spiral of the 1980s that had eroded public confidence in the currency over the preceding decade. The "Nuevo" designation was always meant to be temporary, and it was formally dropped in 1996 once the government judged that the reform had sufficiently stabilized expectations.
Banco de México printed this series in-house, one of relatively few central banks that has maintained full domestic printing capacity throughout the modern era.
