Algeria was still a French département — not a colony — when this note circulated, a legal distinction that shaped the issuing authority's unusual dual identity. The Banque de l'Algérie et de la Tunisie had already lost its Tunisian mandate by 1958 following Tunisian independence, and the institution was operating under increasing political strain as the Algerian war ground toward its eventual resolution. These notes were printed in Paris for a territory Paris was simultaneously fighting to retain.

Marliat and Broutin were both established Banque de France engravers, working in the intaglio tradition that gave French colonial notes their characteristic depth. The series was withdrawn following Algerian independence in 1962 and the establishment of the Banque Centrale d'Algérie.
