The "NF" designation — Nouveau Franc — places this note at the very moment France revalued its currency on 1 January 1960, when 100 old francs became 1 new franc. Algeria was still a French département at the time, so the conversion applied there as well. The Bank of Algeria's 1000-franc stock wasn't immediately replaced; instead, existing notes were given the "10 NF" surcharge, a cost-effective stopgap that avoided a complete reprint during a period of acute political instability.
Marliat and Broutin were both senior engravers at the Banque de France's Chamalières facility, regularly paired on colonial and overseas issues. The base 1000-franc design predates the surcharge by several years.
