Golda Meir's appearance on the New Sheqel series came just over a decade after her death, during a period when Israel was still restructuring its monetary system following the hyperinflation that had effectively destroyed the old Sheqel. The New Sheqel itself was introduced in 1985 at a rate of 1,000 old Sheqalim, one of the steeper currency redenominations in Israeli history.
Asher Kalderon, who engraved the series, was the dominant figure in Israeli banknote engraving for decades — his hand is on most of the significant Israeli issues from the 1970s through the 1990s. A print run of just over twelve million across seven years of issue is relatively modest for a circulating denomination, and used examples in honest condition are not difficult to find.
