Israel's 1967 capture and subsequent annexation of East Jerusalem remains one of the most legally contested territorial actions of the twentieth century — the UN Security Council has never recognized Israeli sovereignty over the unified city, a position held by the vast majority of member states to this day. This coin was issued at a moment when that diplomatic fault line was about to crack further open: the Trump administration's December 2017 recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and the subsequent embassy relocation, came just months after this piece entered production.
Struck in 22-karat gold at the Israel Mint, Petersberg.
