The Isle of Man gained full control over its own coinage through the Isle of Man Coinage Act 1971, which coincided with British decimalization and allowed the island to issue its own decimal series rather than simply circulating mainland UK coinage. The 1975 silver proof issues were struck by the Pobjoy Mint, which had secured the contract from the Manx government and would go on to become the island's primary minting partner for decades.
The .925 silver version was produced for collectors rather than circulation, with the base cupro-nickel equivalent handling everyday transactions.
