The 2005 issue marked the redenomination that dropped six zeros from the Turkish lira — one of the largest such operations in modern monetary history, reflecting accumulated inflation that had turned the old lira into one of the lowest-valued currencies on earth by the early 2000s. The "New Lira" designation was always meant to be temporary, and the word "New" was officially dropped from the currency name in 2009.
Printed at the central bank's own facility in Ankara, this series introduced a new security thread specification to the Turkish banknote program alongside the redesigned denominations.
