Taiwan has issued lunar new year commemoratives in this format since the 1990s, cycling through the zodiac with each successive issue. The Tiger cycle beginning in 2022 coincided with the first full Lunar New Year celebrated under pandemic-era restrictions that had severely disrupted traditional cross-strait family gatherings — a fact unremarked on the coin itself but very much present in the year of its release.
The applied color layer, added after striking, is a cold process. It does not affect the underlying relief but is vulnerable to handling, which makes uncirculated storage the only sensible approach for long-term preservation.
